How To Get David Beckham’s Haircut

For a man who used to change his haircut more than he changed his pants, Mr Beckham has held onto this style (or variations of) for quite some time. As a man who is admired and envied in equal measures, it isn’t difficult to see how this popular ‘pompadour’, ‘faux mowhawk’ hairstyle has become so mainstream. A quick internet search will find endless images of men sporting this coiffed barnet coupled with a short back and sides.

So how exactly does David Beckham get it looking so good all the time? The answer is not only in the cut itself, but also in the post-cut styling and product use.

The Cut

There is a noticeable difference in the length of hair on top when compared to the sides. It is a dramatic inequality that is not going to suit every man. Those with longer faces are only going to elongate further so may be suited to styling this a little flatter. But for the David Beckham look, ask your barber to taper the sides then gradually up the clipper length moving from the neck towards the crown. On top it’s just trimmed into the shape, although those with thicker hair may like to ask to lose a bit of weight. Weight is only going to make your coiffing job harder, so remove any excess for a smoother ride.

The Style

Ditch your traditional brush or comb and opt for a round brush that is ideal for blow drying any volume into the hair. Use at the root and roll backwards when applying heat from root to tip. This will manipulate the hair into curling backwards with some additional height.

Find and follow the natural parting of your hair. Use a comb or brush to separate so when you come to drying you aren’t forcing your hair to go in an unnatural direction.

The Products

A secret from GQ is that a combination of dry shampoo and wax/paste can be a secret to getting an elevated look. In addition we would advise experimenting with products like salt sprays. Apply the spray when the hair is damp, and when blow dried it adds strength to most styles.

When the style is looking as intended, then some additional hairspray is a must for combating daily life. A small spray is just going to add a layer of protection to stop the hair drooping or going flat.
