How To Wash Your Hair Correctly

man with hair shampoo

The principle of shampooing men’s hair is easy, right? You jump in the shower, grab your generic shampoo and lather it in for a bit. Rinse it off, then off you go. The process for most men is it needs to be quick and efficient.

But what exactly is the need for shampooing? Well, not only does it remove leftover hair product, and any dirt or grime built up over time. It also has a beneficial effect on the scalp. Exfoliating it, whilst improving circulation. All these elements will lead to better looking locks and a healthier scalp. Taking a bit more time on this important component of your morning routine will have a long-lasting effect on the overall health of your hair.

So what should a proper shampoo look like? Follow our steps to giving your hair the correct morning wash.

  1. Rinse through the hair – This will enable the shampoo to glide through and get to the root of each hair. It will also help to loosen any dirt or product still in the hair. Use your fingers to get into the roots of the hair ensuring that the water can cover each follicle.
  2. Check water temperature – Hot water can irritate skin, and strip the hair of essential oils. So turn down the heat and prepare to wash your hair with warm water.
  3. Apply the shampoo – Don’t use too much, just a blob in the palm of your hand. For those with long hair best to comb the shampoo through.
  4. Massage the scalp – Use your fingers in a circular motion around the scalp to get the shampoo deep into the roots.
  5. Time – You want to continue massaging for at least a couple of minutes
  6. Rinse – Thoroughly rinse any product from the hair
  7. Condition – Using a conditioner follow much of the same rules as before, just apply to the hair in stroking motions instead. Leave in for a few minutes before thoroughly rinsing out with cool water.
  8. Dry – Towel dry your hair by patting or stroking. Using forceful back and forth motions will damage the hair.

  • Being too rough with wet hair can damage the cuticles so don’t use fingernails or scrub too hard
  • No need to repeat the shampoo process. Brands want you to buy more shampoo so encourage you to do so. But your hair doesn’t need it
  • Using cold water to rinse the final conditioner out will close the cuticles. Much like after shaving, cold water will close pores and stop any ingrowing hairs, or dirt from getting in.

We would add that a pre-cursor to step 1, would be to make sure that you have chosen the correct shampoo for your hair type. If you are prone to greasy hair or a dry scalp, picking the right product for your problem is giving your hair the best start possible.
